When you get on the golf course, are you starting to feel that the ‘zing’ you once had is missing? Are your clubs feeling heavier? Is your ball dropping short of your usual length? Do you just accept it? Do you just put it down to age? Those aches and pains that come when you get older. After all, it’s not as if you’re unfit. You do your stint on the exercise bike every day. Well stop right there! Don’t Blame Your Age! Age is no excuse, and you are guilty of confusing ‘fitness’ with ‘fitness for golf’. Fitness for golf is that fitness which keeps you driving with full power and strength, because you are training the muscles and joints you use when playing golf. Without exercising these specific parts of your body with a fitness for golf program, it doesn’t matter how generally fit you are, your game will suffer. Don’t blame age for your inability to maintain your swing mechanics; for that slight movement just before you putt. Fitness for golf is on everybody’s lips right now. It’s even on TV, and the pros have discovered the benefits of fitness for golf exercises. If you don’t keep those golfing muscles and joints working, they will decline – you can bet your last cent on it! Stop Those Aches And PainsYou need to put resistance and pressure on muscles and joints to keep them strong; otherwise, they will weaken and rapidly lose flexibility and strength. How about those times when you were so busy at work, or with your family, that you just didn’t bother with training. I bet you started to feel a bit weaker and less able to enjoy a round of golf properly, seeing your scores go up, and feeling more and more aching afterwards. Fitness for golf can stop all this. It’s no good going to a gym and just getting fit on a bike or treadmill. You have to work on the parts of the body you use for golf. Get a weight and swing with it, as though you we on the course. Get some flexibility exercises for your shoulders, hips, lower back and all the other major muscle groups and joints you use in your swing. Power up your rotational strength.
Maintain Your LengthAs you get older, you have to keep flexible to be able to make a full backswing, and follow the swing to completion for a full powered drive; to be able to keep your length where it should be, not 20 yards short. Therefore, the next time you feel that your game is starting to decline, ask yourself one simple question: “When did I last work on my fitness for golf?” Then do something about it! These are just a few of the reasons why fitness for golf is important, and different from your general fitness, and I hope that I have started you thinking on how important it is in keeping you on top of your game, especially as you get older.
