An injury to the elbow for a golfer is painful and one that won't go away quickly! The worst part of this type of injury is the golfer goes back to the course thinking it has gotten better only to find out it's still there and as painful as ever! There is a common similarity between tennis elbow and golfer elbow. They both occur from the excessive over-gripping of the club, be it a tennis racket or a golf club. Unfortunately, the treatment for an elbow injury is rest, ice and light strengthening and stretching exercises. The key being rest to not agitate the area. The elbow joint is a highly active joint in the golf swing and is easily overstressed. The reason why a golfer elbow injury takes so long to heal and in some cases may never really go away, is because it is the sort of injury that involves a joint. The complexity of the joints tendons, ligaments and joint capsules make it very difficult to pinpoint and cure it. One of the reasons is that it is difficult to rest a joint completely and one ends up using the muscles whenever they make any slight movement. That is why it is so important to baby this area until it is healed. When you start back, ease into it as not to start it all over again! Stretching and strengthening exercises specific to your golf muscles can help a great deal in strengthening and conditioning the muscles involved. The benefit of strengthening golf specific muscles is a golfer ends up putting much less pressure on the tendons that join the muscles to the bones around the elbow area. This greatly reduces the risk of this injury in golfers. Warming up that area before you practice or play will greatly help prevent pain and agitation. Something as simple as squeezing a rubber ball 10-20 times and applying some heat to the area can make a big difference. Cooling down with ice after the round or practice will also help in reducing the incidence of injury to the elbow. Warm ups ensure that the pressures involved in playing the game are not exerted on cold muscles, which usually dramatically increases the chances of all sorts of injury and not just the 'golfer' elbow.
