You want to improve your golf game – get a lower handicap?
Have you thought about lifting weights for golf improvement? I suppose you think it was something the muscle-bound did. These guys covered in oil on the glossy mags.
Not for you, who has to be a supple, mean, lean machine! Why go into a gym full of muscle-heads just waiting to rib you? I know how you feel.
Time to look at a few myths...
Through lifting weights for golf training? No way! You think you will be so muscle bound you couldn’t swing right, don’t you? You’ve never seen a guy with a Mr. Universe body win the PGA, have you?
Nope, but...When lifting weights for golf, the special training schedules cannot increase your muscle bulk to that extent. Lifting weights for golf involves fewer calories than the Mr. Universes eat, and lighter weights, with fewer repetitions over a shorter time frame.
How do you think Tiger Woods gets so much power to the ball? I’ve read that he can bench press about 300 lb. Are you telling me his training schedule is wrong?
OK, I understand your concern. However, it may sound strange, but if you are lifting weights for golf training the opposite will happen. Lifting weights increases your blood flow and strengthens the ligaments and tendons in every joint in your body. With a program designed for golfers, your flexibility will actually improve.
I know what you mean, but just think about it a minute. What has strength got to do with ‘feel’. Think of the following qualities required by any golfer:
The Swing: flexibility, complete coordination and strength for maximum flow of energy from the body through the clubface to the ball.
The Putt: Total control of the muscles of the arms, back and legs for complete stillness and controlled movement.
The Round: Endurance and strength to play with maximum power throughout 18 holes, day after day.
You develop all of these essential factors when lifting weights for golf. You develop the strength for maximum power over 18 holes and the muscular control needed for your putt. ‘Feel’ comes from experience and you don’t lose it by become stronger and fitter.
Don’t worry. Lifting weights for golf will help you regardless of age. Whether 18 or 80, you can increase your strength by 100%. I have worked with people of 70 -80 years who have achieved just that.
