Mental Golf Is Simple Psychology

The mental side of golf is an area more golfers need to focus on, and it's as easy as taking psychology 101. As I have said before, I am not a mental golf guru or psychologist…I'm just a regular golfer like you who struggles on the course daily. Many of these struggles are in my mind…are yours?

Psychology for golf is not complicated

Psychology deals with your mind and mental barriers of resistance. We deal with these all day, every day and not just in golf. We are constantly putting up barriers that make it difficult to succeed. Each barrier we put up, the farther away we get from our goals. The psychology aspect in golf is exactly the same.

These barriers can be past experiences we've had on a certain hole or a certain course. They can be the psychological barrier we put on ourselves to execute a good shot. This requires confidence in our swing…which isn't always the case is it? Experiencing a blow up hole is hard to let go.

Improve Mental Toughness

Does mental toughness in golf mean that we won't make the same mistake that caused a ballooned scored last time we played? Or does it mean, when we are under the same pressure from the same hole we've played before…that we will not succumb? Or is it a phrase that really means nothing?

Mental toughness can be your approach to not repeating a bad swing over and over again when you're in the middle of a round. It can be standing on the toughest hole on your home course and facing it head on. It can be turning your game around quickly after a big number on the previous hole.

Total 100% Mental Focus

When you hear the top of mental golf and psychology, you can't ignore the term focus. Focus for golf can mean many things, but staying "in the now" is what I think of. Really try to concentrate on your current shot. Every aspect of the shot from wind, lie, bunkers, everything.

Mental concentration (focus) can be draining…that's why most golfers can't seem to do it for 18 holes of golf. Doing some reading and coming up with a mental golf tip you can apply during play would be a good start.
